While capturing a sixth straight Sectional title, the 1987 CHS Boys Track and Field Team qualified 15 individuals for the IHSA Class AA State Meet. In route to the state meet, they won their own Orphan Relays over runner-up East St. Louis (which later finished second at the state meet), and took third of 27 teams at the Paducah Tilghman Relays.

The Orphans won the South Seven Conference title with ten first place finishes and scored in all but one event.  Conference champions were: Chad Williams (high jump), Jason Smith, Michael Powe, Kermit Johnson, Reuben Hill (400m relay), Neal West (3200m run), Reuben Hill (200m dash), Kermit Johnson, Mike Brown, Jesse Keith, Vince Schwartz (1600m relay), Mike Brown, Jesse Keith, Nick Schwartz, Vince Schwartz (3200m relay), Nick Schwartz (1600m run), Jason Wernsman (triple jump), Kurt Knolhoff (300m low hurdles), Michael Powe (long jump).  

At the Sectional meet, they won 13 of 18 events and again scored in all but one event to top the 16 team field.  Those qualifying for State were: Tim Fletcher (3200m relay team), Jesse Keith (800m run, 1600m and 3200m relay teams), Vince Schwartz (1600m and 3200m relay teams), Nick Schwartz (1600m run, 3200m relay team), Kurt Knolhoff (300m low hurdles, 800m relay team), Michael Powe (400m relay team, long jump), Kermit Johnson (400m, 800m, 1600m relay teams), Reuben Hill (100m, 200m dashes, 400m, 800m relay teams), Jason Smith (400m relay team), Mike Brown (400m dash, 1600m relay team), Neal West (1600m, 3200m runs), Billy Alli (shot put), Lee Wolff (pole vault), Chad Williams (high jump), Jason Wernsman (triple jump).  

At the State Meet, Nick Schwartz took sixth in the 1600m run (4:15.4) and Neal West placed sixth in the 3200m run (9:13.69).  New CHS records set during the season were: 100m Dash (Reuben Hill) 10.71, 200m Dash (Reuben Hill) 21.9 (eclipsed mark set in 1916 by Harry Davis), Sprint Medley Relay (Mike Brown, Kermit Johnson, Reuben Hill, Nick Schwartz) 3:33.7, Distance Medley Relay (Vince Schwartz, Mike Brown, Tim Fletcher, Neal West) 10:23.66, Four Mile Relay (6400m) (Neal West, Jesse Keith, Vince Schwartz, Nick Schwartz) 17:57.7. The 100m, 200m and Four Mile Relay records still stand at CHS. In addition to these records, the Four Mile Relay, Sprint Medley Relay, and Distance Medley Relay teams were ranked in the top ten in the nation for the season.

Awards handed out at seasonís end included: High Point Man in Field Events (Jason Wernsman), Outstanding Underclassman (Michael Powe), Most Valuable (Neal West), C.H.S. Outstanding Male Athlete (Neal West), High Point Man in Track Events (Jesse Keith).
