Arguably the best baseball team in CHS history, the Orphans of 1961 finished the season 20-2. While two other teams went farther in state playoffs, and other teams have had better won-lost records, the team of 1961 had many eye-popping statistics.

They outscored their opponents 226-29, averaging ten runs per game, and scoring 10 or more runs in 12 games.  Twelve shutouts were recorded with pitcher George Dugan having an ERA of 0.00 and Ed Lance had an ERA of 1.49 for the season. Each pitcher recorded one no-hitter.

Rod Stricker led the hitting with a .460 batting average, while Bill Taylor had three home runs and Robert Spears had 34 RBIs. Eight players ended the season with above .300 bating averages.  Dugan still holds five CHS pitching records. Those records are: season shutouts - 6, career shutouts-11, season wins (Spring)-9 (two others tied), season ERA-0.00, consecutive shutout innings-32.

Robert Spears still holds the CHS records of three triples in one game and eight RBIs in one game. The RBI record tied the record set the previous season by teammate Gerald Adams.  The three triples in one game by Spears ties him with several others for second place in the National High School Baseball Record Book. The record is four by two others.
