Norman J. Schuchman
The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame
2007 Individual Award Winner


A 1957 graduate of Centralia High School, Schuchman was named first team All-South Seven Conference in basketball as well as being named fourth team All-State by both the Chicago Sun Times and the Chicago Daily News. 

He was a member of the 1956 undefeated Orphan football team (2TDs). He also lettered in track, as he was a member of the conference champion varsity 880 relay team with Rod White, Robert Steptoe, and Harold Welch.

After high school, Schuchman moved on to Centralia Junior College (now Kaskaskia) where he was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Blue Devilís basketball team. They were Southern Illinois College Conference champions in 1957-58 (20-10) and in 1958-59 (15-8). He was named first team All-Conference each season as well as receiving NJCAA All-Region 4 recognition each season.

Following a two-year layoff, Schuchman entered the University of Missouri at Rolla for the 1961-62 school year. He became the top scorer and rebounder for the Minerís basketball team for two seasons.  

He set single season (549) and career (988) scoring records as well as career scoring average (21.9) and career rebounding average (11.9) records.  His free throw records were 18 (one game) and 157 of 203 (season). These records stood until 1995. Schuchman received MIAA All-Conference honors (first team 1962 and second team 1963) and MIAA All-Conference tournament first team honors in 1961. 

He was among the national small college top twenty in scoring and rebounding while at UMR. 

Schuchman graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1963 and in 1988, was inducted into the UMR sports hall of fame.
