One of the five notorious Mooney brothers who were athletes at Centralia High School, Sam played three years of varsity football and basketball and is one of seven CHS athletes to be named All-State in both football and basketball.

In basketball, he was named News-Gazette honorable mention All-State in 1939. The Cardinals of A.L. Trout finished fourth in State that year with a record of 29-14. In 1938, the basketball team also included his brothers June and Ben and finished with a record of 17-13. The 1937 team was 26-4.

As a Sophomore, he was a member of the fabled 1936 11-0 football team. He led the 1937 (6-3-2) and 1938 (6-5) football teams in scoring with totals of 37 and 52 points respectively. Mooney was named honorable mention All-State in 1938 for his efforts.
